First Tooth & Rice Cereal

We realize that Ryker is not very old to be starting cereal according to most people. However, I have been reading books and articles on how to tell if your child is ready for solids, and we felt that he was ready. One of the main signs are teething and also if the child seems interested in the food you are eating. Ryker is teething and has been very interested in our food for weeks. I noticed his interest when I was at my parents. I thought I was imagining what he was doing; he would lick his lips and get so excited when I would put things up to my mouth. He would express his excitement by making noises and moving his arms and legs at the same time. After I put whatever into my mouth he would look at me like "Where is mine?" and so I started to give him little drinks of water from my cup. He spit most of it out but would reach for the glass for more. This would go on for a couple of minutes until I didn't want to give him anymore. He also tried to take the bread in sacrament and actually got a piece before we could grab his hand. What a silly little guy. Once I got home I started to do some research and found out information on what signs to look for. The week I came home, Ryker was more fussy than usual. I thought that maybe he was just trying to adjust to his schedule of napping and eating but come to find out that he is cutting a tooth. Our son has just been so cranky with the pain of getting this tooth that he was up numerous times at night (making for a cranky mom too). I called my friend Nichole to ask her a few questions about teething and what I should do to help with the pain. Using her advice I went to Walmart that night and got some dissolvable teething tablets that seem to be working wonderfully. Thanks Nichole! I am up for any advice on teething and feeding solids, got any?
Anyways, on Friday September 5th we decided to give the rice cereal a try. Ryker gobbled every bite up as if he were starving. I was expecting him to be fussy or spit most of it out. I didn't expect for him to get so excited and love every minute. Although looking back, who am I kidding; my son would eat just about anything. The second time we tried to feed him it didn't go as well. He was fussy and kept spitting it out. After he ate some milk I tried again and of course he ate it all. My son is a very big eater! He has been eating a little each night since then and has been enjoying the new routine of eating it before he goes to bed. Other than the irregular digestive system issues and stinky diapers I am enjoying the extra few hours of uninterrupted sleep. I can't wait to show off his new tooth when it finally comes through the gums. I am excited for this new adventure with Ryker but it still seems too early. I thought I would have more time to prepare.
I know that the pictures seem as if we don't have a high chair for Ryker but really Dave just wanted to be involved in the process so he decided to hold him on his lap. What a good daddy!

You guys do have some cute family pictures.

How fun Ryker is starting to enjoy some of the many wonderful things there are to eat other than milk! Too bad that from here on out, they start feeling less and less like babies and more and more like little people.

I have to laugh because I had to read up on everything too!!Because I didnt want to do anything wrong!!
Teething is rough though!!! Those teething tablets are the best! Also if you go to target and get these little food taster net things, I forget the name, but they are where the bottles and utensils are. you can put food in them and they can suck/chew on them without getting any chunks. I would put an ice cube in it or a frozen strawberry and Sam would chew on it like crazy!! Little messy, but really made him happy

You guys are just too cute! It's so fun to see pictures of your little Ryker. I'm excited to start Wesley on rice cereal soon, but I know he still has a couple months. Good luck with it all.

I always start my kids on cereal at 4 months, so you are doing just fine. (assuming I am some sort of expert!) ANd I have seen that kid eat his cereal, I was way impressed at how he chowed down!!

Thanks for the night out...it was nice to not get left at home while the boys watch the game. I had a great time. I hope my kids didn't overwhelm you, they can obviously be a bit of a handful at times. It's a good thing that you can work into parenthood gradually.

Hey girl it was so good talking to you today, I sure miss you and that little one of yours. I am glad those teething tablets worked:) You are such a good mommy, I am so proud of you! Give Ryker a big hug for me. Oh and have fun cleaning up all those fun food messes :) If he is not messy yet give him a couple of months when he wants to feed himself. You have seen the pictures on my blog:)

It is fun to see what is happening with Ryker developmentally wise and think that will be Sadie in just a few months. I love Ryker's smile in that picture on the sidebar.
